The work of the laboratories constituted in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) was the basis for the structuring of PPGAU and, until today, it is these laboratories that guarantee the flow of research in the program with the participation of professors, undergraduate students (scientific research and volunteers) in articulation with the students of PPGAU UFPa. The program houses the six laboratories created by FAU professors who originally composed the tenured professors of the Program and who support teaching, research and undergraduate and graduate courses in the sub-areas of the Architecture and Urbanism discipline field, namely: • Laboratory Cities in the Amazon – LABCAM (urbanism) • Laboratory of Development and Analysis of Built Space – LADEC (environmental comfort) • Laboratory of Historiography of Architecture and Architectural Culture – LAHCA (historiography) • Laboratory Space and Development Human – LEDH (project) • Laboratory of Conservation and Restoration – LACORE (restoration) • Laboratory of Memory and Cultural Heritage – LAMEMO (memory and ethnography) • Laboratory of Construction Technology – LABTEC (Technology).

The composition of the faculty of PPGAU required the collaboration of researchers based in other units and linked to other laboratories, which began to support the students of the program in the development of their research, of which four continue to support the research developed under PPGAU: the Laboratory of Acoustics (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), CEAMAZON (Advanced Systems Laboratory, Environmental Comfort Lab, Energy Quality and Energy Efficiency Laboratory, Electrical Energy Quality Lab), Archeology Laboratory and History (Emílio Goeldi Museum), and the Mineral Characterization Laboratory (Institute of Geosciences). In addition to these ten laboratories, the Construction Technology Lab – LATEC (at the FAU), which will support undergraduate education and graduate activities in the area of construction materials and systems, is being structured. The laboratories enable physical space and access to equipment in the various research areas, but are not cells that terminate the researchers' performance. Historically, research was carried out by articulating two or more laboratories (e.g.: projects approved in a universal announcement of 2011, with the participation of Labcam and Ladec), as well as the interfaces facilitated the organization of events (e.g.: LAHCA, Lamemo and LEDH III SAMA 2018). The development of the doctoral proposal (APCN 2017) prompted the commitment of greater articulation between the laboratories from the main research lines that govern the two lines of research (built environment and performance).

Laboratory City Architecture and History of the Amazon – LABCAM

Since 2003, the laboratory has supported the development of studies, diagnoses and research in the urban, metropolitan / regional and municipal scales, in the Amazonian context, within urban planning and design approaches.

Currently, it is coordinated by Professor José Júlio Lima and with the participation of Professor Ana Claudia Cardoso, Professor Juliano Ximenes Ponte and the Professors Roberta Rodrigues and Raul da Silva Ventura Neto, these last two being not accredited in the PPGAU.

The laboratory's production was disseminated through articles presented at national and international academic events, in national book chapters and journals, with more recent products posted on the website (www.labcam.org). The laboratory also generated research grants for scientific initiation and master's degree within the scope of research developed.

The general objectives of LABCAM are:

  • Development of methods for the development of articulated research that enable a broad and comprehensive reading of contemporary processes of production and appropriation of the urban spaces of the Amazon;
  • Construction of database and general information (database and cartography updated with GIS technology) as a way to support research and extension activities.

Laboratory of Development and Analysis of Constructed Space – LADEC

Laboratory of Development and Analysis of Built Space (LADEC), located in the Atelier of Architecture and Urbanism of FAU UFPa, is coordinated by Professor Irving Montanar Franco, although the professor is no longer accredited in PPGAU, provides space for the development of research of students of the program. The LADEC supports the graduation through grants of CI, the performance of the masters in the teaching stage and participation in research.

Its objectives are:

   a) To develop and subsidize teaching, research and extension practices focused on sensorial-environmental awareness (light, acoustics, thermal and hygiene), exploring its repercussions on the environmental sustainability and energy efficiency of the built space;
     b) Contribute, as far as possible, to the process of certification of energy performance of buildings, inserting practices with undergraduate subjects;
     c) Offer opportunity of instrumental practices through the collection of equipment obtained in agreement with Eletrobrás.

Ladec was formed in 2006, funded by PROCEL Edifica Program (Eletrobrás), through a line of support for the acquisition of equipment by the undergraduate courses in Architecture and Urbanism. Today, the laboratory is equipped with analogue and digital sensors to measure temperature, humidity and wind speed, with simulation software of thermal load, water table, sound pressure meters, among other equipment required for research with heat, light and sound vibration.

Space and Human Development Laboratory – LEDH

The Laboratory Space and Human Development (LEDH), coordinated by Professor Ana Klaudia de Almeida Viana Perdigão, has, for the past 10 years, added research interests with other UFPA groups linked to the areas of social work and psychology. It is defended an architecture defined beyond appearance and that offers qualities for the best experience in spaces of great human permanence, what justifies the construction of research objects delineated by the 'space use', be the space produced by architects or not. The research and graduate activities developed in the laboratory focus on the nature of architectural design in undergraduate education, the production process and epistemology as a way of researching the architectural practice. Research in this area has provided important results for reflection and project practice, as well as disseminating a knowledge more committed to the riverside culture and to the identity of the Amazon Region.

The laboratory is located in the building of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of UFPA, seeks to disseminate the spatial approach of the project as a conditioner of theoretical-methodological explorations in the field of architecture. The objectives of the laboratory are:

  • Construct research objects that result in theoretical-operative formulations of the architecture project for spaces of great human permanence;
  • Refine theoretical-methodological tools around the subjectivities in the field of architecture for design purposes;
  • To investigate the links of users with space by the context of spatial representations for instrumentalization of architectural conception.

Research developed: • The PAC Urbanization of Precarious Settlements in Amazonian Cities: a methodological proposal for the evaluation of production and human occupation in housing policy in Belém and Macapá (Call MCTI / CNPq / MCIDADES Nº 11/2012) • Evaluation of housing production and human occupation in precarious settlements in the Amazon: case study (Universal Announcement of CNPq 2017-2020).
